O’Keefe Rail Trail

Travellers have been taking this historic journey from Bendigo to Heathcote since 1888, when the railway line first linked the towns. Trains stopped running in 1956, and the route lay largely dormant until the first section of the O’Keefe Rail Trail opened in 1993.

Today the recreational trail beside the old railway line again allows users to journey the full 50 kilometres, albeit at a slightly slower pace. It’s just as well too, as there’s lots to take in.

The safe, mostly-level walking and cycling trail is one of Victoria’s great family-friendly journeys. It passes through some spectacular natural bushland, past waterways and recreation reserves, perfect for picnics, wildflower or platypus spotting.

Pack your bag for a stopover in Heathcote, where superb restaurants, wineries and bed and breakfasts await. Or take a shorter section of the trail.The half-way point of Axedale features the beautiful Campaspe River Reserve, ideal forre-charging by the water. Pioneer Andrew O’Keefe is recognised for his construction of many local railway lines. He migrated to the goldfields from Ireland in the wake of the great potato famine, finding his fortune in iron track. This line, including 50 bridges, took 21 months to complete at a cost of 88,409 pounds, and two derailments in the process.

The rail trail between Bendigo and Heathcote was completed in 2015, with funding from the Victorian Government and the City of Greater Bendigo. Passionate community group The Friends of the Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail Inc, continue to be instrumental in the development, care and promotion of the trail, for the enjoyment of locals and visitors.
Access Points:

• Weeroona Avenue Bendigo – At the north western end of Lake Weeroona, the public car park (adjacent the Bendigo Rowing Clubrooms) off Weeroona Avenue is the closest (approx 400metres) parking area to the O’Keefe trail’s start/end point at the Bendigo Creek Trail intersection. At this lake area reserve, as well as adequate car parking, facilities like a café, picnic shelters, public toilets, plus well developed playground facilities. The Bendigo Railway Station is approximately 3km to the south, on Railway Place Bendigo.
• Pratts Park Rd/Rifle Range Rd has a ‘bush style’ car park (located in the corner of the Wellsford Forest Regional Park), adjacent to the O’Keefe Rail Trail’s replica ‘Rifle Butts’ platform.
• Wilkie Rd Junortoun has a formal car parking facility adjacent to the trail.
• Longlea – The trail crosses Longlea Lane, at Peppercorn Park (an equestrian centre). No formal facilities are currently available for the rail trail users at this point.
• Axedale – At the Axedale Hall Reserve, at the corner of High St (McIvor Highway) and Mitchell St, there are car parking, toilets, and playground facilities, Vic Police Station, nearby Axedale General Store, and the Axedale Tavern. Follow trail directional signs within the township area.
• Knowsley Forest – Near the intersection of the Toolleen-Axedale Rd and McIvor Hwy, this is an entry point for the trail into the Knowsley Forest. A reference adjacent to the highway is a power line transformer pole. Care should be exercised when exiting and entering from the McIvor Highway 100kph speed zone. No formal car parking facilities provided.
• Knowsley – At the trail intersection with the Moorabbee Rd in Knowsley, car parking is available at the adjacent Knowsley Tennis Courts.
• Derrinal – Opposite the former Derrinal Railway Station, off Old Bendigo Rd, there is a trail rest stop and replica station name board. No formal car park is provided, so parking on the side of Old Bendigo Rd or Derrinal Station Lane are the only options at this location.
• Heathcote – The Heathcote Visitor Information Centre, corner of High St and Barrack St, provides trail information and car parking facilities. The other trail access points are 1. At Herriott St – Back Kyneton Rd, where formal car parking is provided adjacent to the trail, 2. At the formal south-eastern end/start point of the trail at Pink Cliffs Rd (an informal car parking area is provided, or along side Pink Cliffs Rd).

Friends of the Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail
The Friends of the Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail Inc. are a passionate community group who recognise the potential of a long distance trail on or near the route of the former Wandong, Heathcote, Sandhurst Railway.
This group acts as a specialist trail advisory body to local governments, assists in the current O’Keefe Rail Trail extension projects and cares about community health relating to cycling and to stimulate interest and enthusiasm on the developments. Without the support of the Friends of the Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail group, the Rail Trail would not be where it is today.
